St. Patrick’s Day Traditions.

  • Wearing Green. While we traditionally associate green with Ireland, the original color associated with St. Patrick was blue. It wasn’t until Irish nationalism began to gain steam in the 18th century that green replaced blue.
  • Corned Beef & Cabbage is American. Contrary to the popular belief that this hearty dish is Irish, corned beef and cabbage is an American tradition. St. Patrick’s Day was originally a religious holiday celebrated by eating a festive meal consisting of bacon and cabbage. However, bacon was expensive in the U.S, so Irish immigrants got creative and swapped out the bacon for cheaper corned beef from their Jewish neighbors on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
