In a recent survey of 2,000 adults (half men and half women) regarding auto insurance myths commonly believed, insure.com, an online insurance company, found that men were more likely to believe certain insurance myths than women. The following results were published in the November 2014, Insurance Journal. Just for fun and a little education, let’s take a look at some of the results:

  1. Myth:Red cars cost more to insure because they are pulled over more for speeding.  Fact: NO, in reality, the color of your car doesn’t affect your auto insurance rates. (46% surveyed thought true – 45% women and 48% men).
  2. Myth:If I get a speeding ticket in Nevada, it cannot follow me back home to California. Fact: NO, your tickets do follow you wherever you go. (13% surveyed thought true – 34%- women and 66% men).
  3. Myth:I should avoid getting a new car because thieves prefer to steal newer models. Fact: NO, it is actually more profitable to steal older cars to sell them for their parts. (29% surveyed thought true – 42% women and 58% men)
  1. Myth: Comprehensive auto insurance coverage means full coverage. Fact: NO, the comprehensive coverage portion of your auto insurance actually covers only non-collision related incidents such as vandalism, theft, storm damage and  some animal collisions. (32% surveyed thought true – 41% women and 59% men).
  2. Myth: Small cars are cheaper to insure than larger cars. Fact: NO, in reality small and mid-sized SUVs and mini-vans are generally less expensive to insure. (40% surveyed thought true – 42% women and 58% men).
  3. Myth: If a friend borrows my car and crashes it, their insurance will pay for the damage. Fact: NO, insurance “follows the car” – your insurance as the vehicle owner will be liable for the damage and possibly the driver’s insurance could also come into play. (25% surveyed thought true – 48% women and 52% men).
