Auto theft is on the raise during the holiday season, and burglars may be tempted by what you have stashed in your vehicle. Prevent thieves from stealing gifts and other goodies from your car by following a few simple safety tips.

1. Stay alert: Park your vehicle in a well-lit, high-traffic area where criminals will be less likely to disturb your vehicle. If possible, park in a garage or other monitored area.

2. Keep valuables out of sight: Never leave cell phones, money, purses, or other tempting items in your vehicle. If items must be kept in the car, put them in the trunk before parking.

3. Lock the doors: Always keep the vehicle doors locked, even if you will be gone for just a minute. Also never leave loved ones unattended in the vehicle for any amount of time.

4. Contact the police if you feel threatened: If you suspect criminal activity in the area in which you have parked, or see an individual lurking, contact the authorities.

5. Invest in an alarm: Alarm systems are designed to produce a loud siren when the vehicle is opened without authorization.
