Auto Insurance For Self-Driving Cars

While self-driving cars seemed like a futuristic idea, they are now here and on the road, which makes it the perfect time to start thinking about what a “computer driven” car will mean for auto insurance companies.

Since nobody is actually doing any of the driving in an “autonomous” car, it can be difficult to determine who is at fault in an accident. While it may seem logical that the person who is sitting in the driver’s seat would be at fault, how could they be to blame if they had no control over the vehicle?

Since auto insurance provides liability for the owner’s of self-driving cars, you then have to consider if auto insurance providers will provide protection for any accidents that the vehicles are involved in. Insurance companies will have to decide if they will start to exclude self-driving cars from their policies, or if they will only provide coverage for the drivers, even though they do not have any control over the vehicle. We will have to wait and see what the decisions will be in the insurance industry on coverages for these new vehicles going forward.
