Mother’s Day Is Coming Up

Mother’s Day is just a couple of days away, and is the perfect time to show your mom just how much she means to you. Keep this short history of Mother’s Day in mind to know a little more about why this special day was set aside to celebrate the important women in your life.

The idea of Mother’s Day stretches all the way back to the days of the ancient Egyptians, who held an annual festival to honor “the mother of the pharaohs,” the goddess Isis. In more modern times, social activist and poet Julia Ward Howe issued a “Mother’s Day Proclamation” in 1870, which called on mothers to protest the killing that was going on in the Civil War.

While Howe’s proclamation did not start the first national Mother’s Day, it did influence Anna Jarvis. In 1908, Jarvis wanted to accomplish the dream of her late mother to celebrate all mothers. By 1909, over 40 states recognized Mother’s Day, and held Mother’s Day services every year. It did not become a national holiday until 1914.

Celebrate your mom with a special brunch or dinner, just stopping by to visit and cards and flowers are always appreciated!  All of us at Randy Jones Insurance acknowledge how important and loved mothers are and we would like to wish all the mothers out there a very happy Mother’s Day!
