While many choose to avoid thinking about the potential unfortunate circumstances we are all vulnerable to on a daily basis, it is important that you know how you would provide for your family if you suddenly became disabled. The slight chance that you can become either temporarily or permanently disabled is the reason we stress the importance of looking into and/or purchasing a disability insurance policy.

As a small business owner, it is imperative that you purchase a disability benefits package. By offering your employees disability benefits you will be more likely to recruit and retain more valuable employees. As a business owner, you may even qualify for a discount!

As an employee, if you haven’t already done so, check with your employer to see if they provide long term disability income benefits. If your company does provide these benefits, you will want to ask them specifics such as what are their qualifying periods of disability and review with them, and their carrier, if the benefit package offered would be enough to support your family while you are unable to work.

If your employer does not provide disability benefits, then you may want to consider purchasing a private disability income insurance policy.  As an employee, if your income is higher than the average employee, you may be eligible to purchase a policy as a supplement to your group disability programs.
