Many forget the true meaning of Memorial Day and only look forward to celebrating a day off with family and friends. You can still enjoy your family barbecue this year, but try to take a moment to commemorate the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our country and who continue to serve to protect our freedom and that of others. Try to participate in one of the many ways you can celebrate patriotically:
- If you are able to, donate to the families of soldiers who are wounded or have passed.
- The National Moment of Remembrance falls at 3PM on Memorial Day. For that minute, you can choose to observe in any way you feel appropriate.
- Attend a local cemetery’s Memorial Day service, and consider volunteering your time to place American flags or flowers of the graves of lost soldiers.
- Show off your American pride! Whether it be wearing red, white, and blue or sporting something with an American flag on it, it truly makes a difference.
- Educate yourself and your children on the reason behind the 3-day weekend.
- Participating in Memorial Day parades can be fun for the entire family!
