Turkey or Guinea Fowl?

It’s no accident that turkeys have the same name as the country. When the Americas were first discovered, the explorers found that the native birds tasted similar to guinea fowl imported to Europe by the Turks. The birds were then called turkeys. The name stuck and we still call these birds ‘turkeys’ today.

A National Holiday.

Thanksgiving wasn’t always a national holiday. The holiday was first declared a national holiday by President Abraham Lincoln after Sarah Josepha Hale worked to declare the day a holiday. However, the holiday wasn’t officially dubbed a national holiday until it was approved by Congress in the 1940s. Plus, the US isn’t the only nation to celebrate Thanksgiving, Canada also celebrates. But, rather than celebrating in November, our northern neighbors celebrate on the second Monday in October.

All About Turkeys.

Your Thanksgiving meal is centered around the turkey. It’s been a staple holiday food for generations. But, how much do you know about turkeys? Male turkeys are called toms while female turkeys are called hens. Baby turkeys under 12 weeks old are called fryer-roasters. Additionally, only male turkeys gobble. Female turkeys cackle.
