Winter Safety Tips RE: Carbon Monoxide

With winter now in full swing and temperatures dropping, many of us look to a variety of ways to heat our households – fireplaces, wood stoves, space heaters to name a few. But one thing we need to be particularly aware of is carbon monoxide, known also as the  “silent killer.” Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, and invisible gas that can have tragic and fatal consequences if not detected.  To ensure winter safety in  your home here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Do you have a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home? According to the International Association of Fire Chiefs, you should have these life saving devices on each level, including your basement.
  • Install plug-in carbon monoxide detectors with battery back-ups. It is recommended to check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks twice a year. Also test it monthly.
  • Have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil or coal burning appliances serviced once a year.
  • It is important that you know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. They include dull headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, confusion, shortness of breath, and loss of consciousness. If a family member exhibits  any of these symptoms, immediately move them into fresh air and seek emergency assistance.
  • Most importantly, do not make the mistake of assuming your carbon monoxide detectors take away the importance of having smoke alarms, and vise versa. You should have both life saving devices in your home to ensure safety.
