Take preventive action this winter by preparing your home and vehicle for harsh weather conditions. Use this safety winter weather checklist to help keep your family protected in the event of a winter weather emergency.

Communication: In case of a power failure, it’s important to have a form of communication, such as a cell phone or battery-operated radio. Also store extra batteries and a portable charger for your phone. Listen for emergency broadcasts and know what winter storm warning terms mean.

Heating: Since turning on the stove for heat is not safe, have alternative options to keep warm, such as extra blankets, heavy coats and clothing, a fireplace with dry firewood, a gas log fireplace, or portable kerosene or space heater.

Lighting/Cooking: Instead of candles which can pose a fire risk, use battery-operated lanterns or flashlights. Do not use portable charcoal grills or camp stoves indoors.

Food/Home Safety: Be sure to have plenty of drinking water and canned or dry no-cook foods on hand, as well as medication, first aid kit, and a non-electric can opener. Have a supply of rock-salt to melt ice on driveways and walkways.
