The political season is in full swing and as 2016 comes to a close, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is coming under heavy scrutiny. In California, many people who were uninsurable before the ACA was enacted have been able to secure coverage due to the pre-existing conditions clauses being eliminated. People with lower incomes have been given some relief with their health insurance premiums due to government Advanced Premium Tax Credits (APTC). Both of these factors have helped many people be able to obtain health coverage where in the past they could not qualify or afford it.
As great as this sounds, there are still major issues going into 2017. Substantial rate increases are on the horizon for individual policy holders and many physician groups are pulling out of the ACA Exchanges (Covered California) due to lower reimbursement levels and consolidation of physician groups who are requiring higher reimbursements.
